Louise (Cress) Grubbs

Louise Cress Grubbs, 97, of Charlotte died Sunday, February 26, 2017 at home. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 11 at 2:00 p.m.  at Covenant Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall following the service.

Born December 13, 1919 in China Grove, NC, Louise was the daughter of Joseph Franklin and Mary Ophelia Patterson Cress. The oldest of seven children, Louise delighted in the company of her three younger sisters – Pauline, Martha, and Frances – and three brothers – Duard, James, and Charles - as well as their spouses and her many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Grubbs graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College, now ASU, where she met her husband, Dwight. She dedicated her life to the teaching and welfare of young children, as a teacher and as a day care director. Louise excelled at many artistic pursuits, including music, sewing, quilting, knitting, and paper cutting.

A charter member and Elder Emerita of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Louise was active in all areas of church life, notably the music and teaching ministries, and Presbyterian women. She sang in the Covenant choir for over 62 years.

Mrs. Grubbs is survived by her son, Donald Patterson Grubbs of Charlotte; daughters Susan Grubbs Hickok (Alan) of Charlotte, and Marilyn Louise Grubbs of Carrboro; grandchildren Charles, Wesley, and William Grubbs, Emily and Melissa Hickok, and Joseph Grubbs-Hardy (Amber Josey); sister Martha Cress Williamson (George); eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great -grandchildren.

She was pre-deceased by her brothers Charles and Duard, her sisters Frances and Pauline, and her grandson Andy Grubbs. Her brother James died six days after Louise.
