Lucille Peele “Lou” Ross, 79, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on December 10, 2016. She was born on January 30, 1937, in Eagle Springs, NC, to the late Arthur Ray and Effie Brewer Peele. She is survived by her son, Robert Lee Ross, Jr. (wife Amy, and son Sam), her daughter Kimberly Ann Ross Hall (husband Mike, son Justin, and daughter Payton), and her daughter Kelly Lyn Ross Silden (husband Craig, sons Michael and Brandon). She is also survived by her brother Charles Peele, her sisters Virginia Harnish, Evelyn King, Margaret Long, and Helen Langley, her sisters-in-law Betty Jo Peele and Sybil Peele, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brothers Arthur Ray Peele, Jr., John (J.C.) Peele, Paul Peele, and Fletcher Peele, in addition to special friends Tommy “T.T.” Trotter, Pat Nixon, Shirley Patterson, and Ruth Byrd. A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00AM on December 28, 2016, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, 7200 East W.T. Harris Blvd in Charlotte, NC, with family visitation beginning at 10:00AM. Burial services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Charlotte Rescue Mission or Samaritan’s Purse.
“Lucy” graduated from West Mecklenburg High School of Charlotte, NC, in 1955 and from Woman’s College (UNC-G) of Greensboro, NC, in 1959. She received her Masters in English Literature from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in the 1980s.
She retired after 30 years of teaching English in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system at Kennedy Junior High School, Independence High School, East Mecklenburg High School, South Mecklenburg High School, and Myers Park High School. She also spent one year teaching high school in Buffalo, NY, in 1963.
In addition to her teaching career, she helped in the afternoons and weekends with her mother’s florist business, Peele’s Florist, located on Wilkinson Blvd. in Charlotte, NC. After her mother’s passing in 1974, she continued to help run the florist with her husband, Bob Ross, until 1981; afterwards, she kept the florist business open part-time until it finally closed in 1984.
She was tireless in her service to others. She was always available to assist friends and family members, and did her best to help those less fortunate when she could. She almost never said “no” to a person in need, and would do her best to help everyone when her health permitted. She will be greatly missed by her family.
Her favorite Bible verse was Psalm 51:10 – “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”
