Mary Elizabeth (Wilson) Walker

Born March 9, 1922 in Woodbury, CT she departed this earth on Thursday, January 4, 2018 in Charlotte, North Carolina. As the wife of the late Willie B. Walker and mother of her two daughters: Kordasey Walker of Santa Barbara, CA and Jesslyn (Walker) Wright of Charlotte, NC. Mary has always been very close to her family. Beginning with her parents the late Lena (Henry) Wilson and the late Edwin C. Wilson of Hartford, CT. Mary’s siblings that preceded her in death were initiated by her brother, the late Curtis Wilson, her brother, the late Henry C. Wilson and her two sisters, the late Gwendolyn (Wilson) Taylor and Julia (Wilson) Ashe all of Hartford, CT. Her living siblings include her two sisters, Gladys Willery and Janet Goforth both of Hartford, CT. From the historical family recantations, Mary’s maternal family (with the surname of Sulis & Henry) originated from Essex County, Virginia. Mary’s paternal family (with the surname of Zuill & Wilson) originated from Bermuda.

As a graduate of Weaver High School in 1941, Mary held many jobs within the city of Hartford; one as an employee of the GFox department store, an elevator operator on Pratt Street and as a private housekeeper. It wasn’t until in her mid-fifties that she began her career as a telephone operator with the Southern New England Telephone Company (SNET) in downtown Hartford, CT before being transferred to the Wallingford, CT office. Mary retired from SNET after 15 years of employment and relocated with her husband to North Port, FL to enjoy the retired life. Following the death of her husband, Willie B. Walker, in 1989 while living in North Port, FL. Mary’s youngest daughter Jesslyn, son-in-law Curtis and children moved to North Port, FL from Atlanta, GA to care for her mother. After six years in Florida, the entire family then relocated again from Florida to Charlotte, NC in 1999. Mary was still very active in raising and caring for her three grandchildren: Jaguar Emmanuel Craig Wright, Jihan Lavi Joi Wright and Maiya Jade Elizabeth Wright. Mary was also present to witness the birth of her two great-grandchildren: Ameena Lavi Nicole Autry and Inca Indigo Jade Gilkesson.

Housecleaning and laundry were a few of her favorite activities along with watching the TV shows like: Judge Judy and Judge Joe Brown, Jeopardy, The Price is Right and The Wheel of Fortune. While living in Charlotte, Mary also participated in regular casino road trips to Harrah’s Casino in Cherokee and was very lucky multiple times on the slot machines. Mary also enjoyed making her famous fluffy homemade Waffles and Bermudian “hot water” Gingerbread. Mary’s great sense of humor and storytelling of the “good ole days” will be sincerely missed.
