Matthew David Kilgus entered our world on October 1, 1989, in Columbia, SC with Hurricane Hugo advancing. He was born precipitously but healthy and was very active with unbridled curiosity and an even temperament. He grew up as loving, physically strong, athletic, and cognitively bright. God protected him many times when his parents were unable. Matthew spent most of his grade school years in Niagara, Wisconsin and Johnson City, Tennessee and then graduated magnum cum laude as an honors scholar from King College with a dual history and political science baccalaureate degree. He earned his law degree from Washington and Lee University in 2015 and attained membership in the North Carolina Bar. He enjoyed his family, hanging with friends, playing soccer, and weight lifting. We have lost our only son and will miss his warm heart, winning smile, hugs, kisses, the promise of his life and so much more. We now better understand the devastation and magnitude of God’s Gift when He willingly chose to give His only Son to die for the souls of men that they may be reconciled unto Himself. Matt’s last telephone text to his mother was “The Joy of the Lord is my strength.” His earthly life has ended unexpectedly on December 4, 2016 while in sleep but his everlasting life has begun. He is survived by his sister Laura, parents Mark and Rebecca, grandparent Herb Kilgus, and grandparents Robert and Nancy Shelton. We who remain will struggle with his departure but are confident in our hope for resurrections and reunions through Jesus Christ. There will be a celebration of Matt’s life on Saturday 2:30 p.m. at the Forest Hill Church, 7224 Park Road, in Charlotte.
