William Frederick McKinney Mr. McKinney, 91 of Charlotte, passed away Tuesday, May 23rd at Southminster Hospice. Mr. McKinney was born in Altamonte, Avery County on July 9, 1925. Mr. McKinney was the son of the late Alfred Fred McKinney and Minnie Wiseman McKinney. Mr. McKinney, a Charlotte resident for the past 49 years was employed with General Electric and Southern Life Insurance Company. He retired from Southern Life in 1991. Mr. McKinney served as a past President of the Charlotte Association of Insurance Underwriters as well as on the Board of Directors. He was a member of Optimist International, serving in many capacities, including President. Mr. McKinney was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church for 49 years, and served on the Administrative Board, as Treasurer and Chairman of the Trustees. Mr. McKinney joined the Army in 1943, shortly after completing his two-year Business course and was a World War II Veteran. He served in the Infantry for twenty-six months, of which one year was in the European Theater, and was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal. Mr. McKinney was also an active member of Masonic Lodge, #520 and a Shriner. Mr. McKinney was preceded in death by his wife, Velma Fink McKinney, daughter Vickie Maria McKinney, grandson Terry Wayne McKinney, brothers Robert, Sam, Charles, Glenn, and sisters Dorothy, Melba, Jody Vann & Gwendolyn Burleson. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Surviving family members include son, William R. McKinney Sr (wife - Linda F.), grandsons William R. McKinney, Jr. and Justin Michael McKinney (wife - Chelsea), and loving daughter-in-law, Karen McKinney Cope. The family will receive friends Saturday, May 27th from 12-1 PM at Memorial United Methodist Church, 4012 Central Avenue, Charlotte with a service to follow at 1:00 PM with Rev. Jimmy McKinney (nephew) officiating. Burial will take place at Evergreen City Cemetery.
