William Edward (Ed) Parnell
Mr. Parnell, age 93 of Charlotte, passed away December 23, 2016.  He was born October 17, 1923 in Concord, the son of the late Ray and Margaret Parnell.  Ed graduated from Derita High School and attended Mars Hill Jr. College, the University of New Hampshire and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He served in the U.S. Army as a member of the 78th Infantry Division and actively fought at the Battle of the Bulge and the capture of the Remagen Bridge during World War II.  He was awarded the Bronze Star.  He was employed by Sears for 34 years as the group advertising manager.  Ed was an avid golfer and longtime member of Raintree Country Club.  He was a member of Providence United Methodist Church since 1972 and was very active in the Christian Home Sunday School Class.  He was preceded in death by a son, Lynn Parnell and his sister, Evelyn Poole.  He is survived by his wife of 69 years, who was his high school sweetheart, Mildred Overcash Parnell, son Chris Parnell and wife, Mary Jo, daughter-in-law, Sue Parnell, brother, Jim Parnell, 5 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews.  A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 30, 2016 at 11:00 am at Providence United Methodist Church.  The family will receive friends following the service.  Interment will be private.  Memorials may be made to Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster, 8919 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210 or the Christian Home Sunday School Class c/o Providence United Methodist Church, 2810 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28210.  Carolina Funeral & Cremation Center is entrusted with the arrangements.
