Melissa Schumer Obituary

Melissa Weixel Schumer, 70, of Charlotte, passed away on February 25th,2024, after a four-year battle with cancer.  She was surrounded by family and passed peacefully at the Levine and Dickson hospice center.

Melissa was born on July 2,1953 to Frank and Bernadine Weixel in San Antonio, Texas.  Melissa graduated from Ursuline Academy in San Antonio where she made her lifelong high school friends. She went on to study education at Southwest Texas University in San Marcos where she enjoyed manske rolls and warm days in the Guadalupe River.  She pursued teaching physical education until going back to school to receive her master’s in nursing from the University of Texas at San Antonio.  She spent thirty-five years primarily as a NICU nurse and a nursing supervisor at Atrium Health Pineville. Melissa was an extremely hard worker and was a night nurse for all her career.  She cared for so many over the years and was a strong, caring, compassionate person.

In 1979, Melissa met Barry Schumer at the Jewish Community Center of Houston where they both worked. They were married for almost forty years and loved walks in the park with their beloved dog, Molly.  They had many laughs together and Barry loved Melissa’s sense of humor, which she demonstrated until the very end.  Melissa had her first child, Lindsay, in 1977.  They shared a love of Tex Mex and drives in the Texas Hill Country.  Melissa and Barry had Justin and Kyle Schumer together 1988 and 1990.   Melissa loved watching Justin play baseball, and Kyle could always make her laugh. Melissa had three grandchildren, Jack, Collin , and Caroline Scanlan.  She loved being a grandmother from the moment they were born and spent so much time caring for them, playing with them, talking with them, and being an extremely proud Granny.

Melissa was loved by so many family and friends. She always picked up the phone when her kids called and was the wise sage for advice about everything.   She loved lunches with friends and volunteering for the Red Cross and Senior Olympics. She also had many talents from sewing to making cards to making the world’s best Rice Krispie treats, according to her grandkids.  She was easy to be around and loved people very well.  Melissa gave all her children and grandchildren a special Christmas ornament every year and we are so thankful to have these special reminders of her always.

Melissa is survived in death by her husband, Barry Schumer and children, Lindsay Scanlan with husband Sean, Justin Schumer with his fiancé Sam Kruse, and Kyle Schumer, with husband Rob Young.  She has three grandchildren from Sean and Lindsay Scanlan: Jack, Collin, and Caroline Scanlan.
