MADELINE K. LESKO
FEBRUARY 3,1927 ~ APRIL 2, 2024
Madeline K. Lesko died at Matthews Medical Center on April 02, 2024. Her death was
unexpected, and it ended a wonderful, long, and fulfilling life.
That life began in 1927. She was of Moravian decent with her family's heritage in
Ratiskovice, located in what is now the Czech Republic. She retained fluency in Czech and
enjoyed her visits there.
Madeline, who was known by many as "Elie" was in her twenties when she married Walter
Lesko. His career as an engineer with IBM provided them with many domestic and
international travel opportunities. It also provided them the chance to live in Holzgerlingen,
(then West) Germany. Madeline was able to travel extensively throughout Europe, the
Soviet Union, the Holy Land and northern Africa.
Following her husbands’ relocation to Charlotte, NC they continued to enjoy travel,
especially cruises. On one memorable cruise to Antarctica passengers had to be evacuated
from the large ship and were hosted by local citizens. Both were also avid golfers.
The couple remained in the Charlotte area following Walter's retirement and enjoyed the
strong friendships they established and retained in the community. They were also able to
be closer to family and friends who were located primarily in New York and Florida.
Madeline Lesko was a long-time member of St John Neumann Catholic Church in Charlotte.
She and her late husband WaIt, held many offices in the church 50 plus club. They enjoyed traveling and
planned many trips for the group. Madeline was also a member of the Ladies AuxiIIary, Red Hats and
Rodeo organizations. She loved her crossword puzzles, going to the Theatre, playing Bunco and being
amongst her friends for lunch and other outings. She was a gentle lady, loved and will be missed by
many.
Madeline was predeceased by her parents and her husband Walter Lesko
and her siblings, Anastasia and Joseph, as well as a close cousin, Sophie. She is survived
by her daughter, Diane Fitzgerald of Albuquerque, New Mexico; nieces and nephews and Sheila Grant who was special to her.
A funeral mass will be held at St John Neumann Catholic Church at 845 1 Idlewild Rd in
Charlotte, NC on April 20, 2024 at 11 :00 AM. Internment will be held in Binghamton NY at a
later date. Flowers are gratefully declined, donations may be made to the Church facilities fund
or to St Jude Children's’ Hospital.
