Carolyn Hawkins Obituary

Carolyn Transou Hawkins passed away at home on Monday, July 9, 2018 at the age of 75 with family by her side.  She was born in Winston Salem, North Carolina on August 2, 1942.  She graduated from Myers Park High School in 1960 and attended WCUNC before her marriage of more than 56 years to her husband, Harry.

A loving and supportive wife, she was also a dedicated and loving mother, happy to share her experience and wisdom with her children.  "Nana" was a doting grandmother who loved hosting sleepovers, baking cookies, reading books, and was always willing to get down on the floor and play games or read chapters from Little House on the Prairie.  She was selfless to a fault, putting others' needs before her own, and battled her illness with dignity and grace to the end.  She will be deeply missed by not only family but by each and everyone she touched.

Carolyn was a prolific reader of mystery and foreign intrigue novels.  She volunteered in CMS instilling the same passion for reading in young children through the Junior Great Books program.  She loved crocheting, knitting, and cross-stitching and generously gave of her time creating hats and blankets for the children's section at Brunswick County Novant Hospital.  She was also an accomplished bridge player, playing duplicate and accumulating master points.

Carolyn retired from University Research Park, Inc. where she was Corporate Secretary and Executive Assistant to Cliff Cameron (Chairman of University Research Park and Board Member of First Union National Bank).  Prior to her career with University Research Park, she established her own court reporting company as a freelance court stenographer working in Mecklenburg and surrounding counties.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Byron F. and Flora B. Transou.  She is survived by her loving husband, Harry Hawkins, daughter Tracy Hawkins Edwards, son Chad (Wendi) Hawkins and grandchildren Regan and Nicholas.  She is also survived by siblings Kathy Transou Greeson, Betty Transou Freer, and Byron F Transou Jr.

A memorial service to honor Carolyn will be held at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, 11501 Bain School Road, Mint Hill, NC 28227 on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at 2:00 pm.  The family will receive guests immediately following the service in the Rotunda.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Levine Cancer Institute or Regency Hospice would be greatly appreciated.
