Constance Barnes Obituary

Constance Housman Barnes, 64, passed away April 23, 2019 after a long battle with breast cancer. Connie was born on an Army base in Stuttgart, Germany on November 15, 1954 to Mary Brinson Walker Housman and Clifford Arthur Housman. Eventually settling in Victoria, Virginia with her parents and brother Scott, Connie graduated from Central Senior High School in 1972 and married her high school sweetheart, Eddie Haskins Barnes in April, 1974.

Connie fell in love with Charlotte when she traveled here with her mom to buy clothes and accessories for a shop they owned back home. Ned and Connie relocated to Charlotte with their son, Benjamin, in 1980. They built a life together here. Connie was an active participant in her son’s life, often traveling with him on school trips. She took care of and doted on her mom until she passed. She made every holiday and birthday magical for her family and friends. She had a special and personal relationship with God and bonded with several of the women chaplains at Levine Cancer Center. Connie loved animals and rescued her fair share of dogs and cats over the years. She also had exquisite taste, made a beautiful home, and even when she was sick, always took the time to accessorize. She lit up the room even and especially at Levine. Connie was the most extroverted introvert (i.e. extroverted on her terms) we ever met and made friends everywhere she went and if you were with her, you’d better allow extra time for lingering conversations. As a family, we teased her about it relentlessly. She couldn’t have cared less. Connie loved fiercely and quickly. We will miss her with equal ferocity.

Connie is survived by her husband Ned; son Benjamin and his wife Beth; brother, Scott Housman and his wife Kim; furry babies and a bunch of furry grandkids she adored. No official services will be held as the family requests privacy at this difficult time. However, if you’d like to honor Connie’s memory, in lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte or The Greater Charlotte SPCA
