Jack Arnold Shumaker, Sr. 94 of Fort Mill, SC.,  formerly of Bluefield, WV., passed away peacefully at home on March 30, 2017 surrounded by loved ones.   Born on July 9, 1922 in Princeton, WV, Jack was the son of the late William Sidney and Margaret Gertrude (Bailey) Shumaker.  He was raised in Bluefield, WV. where he also attended school.  After graduation, Jack married his high school sweetheart Melva Payne of Hinton, WV.  Mr. Shumaker joined the US. Army in 1943 and served overseas as a machine gunner.   He was captured, and for the next 6 months was held as a POW until the camp was liberated in 1945. 
Jack returned home to Melva and their son Jack, Jr.  The family settled down in Bluefield and raised 2 more children, daughters Barbara and Martha.  Mr. Shumaker was employed as a  machinist with Coppinger Machinery Company for 37 years until his retirement.  He also served as a deacon at First Baptist Church of Bluefield.  Thereafter, Jack and Melva traveled between their homes in Estero, FL. and Bluefield before finally settling in Sun City,SC in 2009.
Mr. Shumaker was preceded in death by his son Jack, Jr.; brothers William "Buck" Shumaker, Jim Shumaker and sister Nancy Shumaker Day.  Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 75 years Melva of Fort Mill, SC.;  daughters Barbara Shumaker Vlijmincx of York, SC. and Martha Shumaker Tillery of Raleigh, NC.; brother Robert Shumaker of Orange Park, FL.; daughter in law Phyllis Shumaker of Fort MIll, SC.; grandchildren Lisa Murphey Ward of Kingsland, GA., Brian Shumaker (Gina) of Indian Trail, NC., Jennifer Shumaker (Eddie) and Jennifer Hrischenko (George) all of Charlotte,NC and Ben Thomas of Raleigh, NC.  Also surviving are his 7 great grandchildren and 2 great great granddaughters.
The family would to thank special family member Frances Shumaker, caregivers of Always Best Care, Sun City neighbors and friends and Hospice of York County for their care, support and comfort.
Mr. Shumaker's ashes will be interred at the Roselawn Cemetery, Princeton, WV at a later date.  A service to celebrate the life of Jack Shumaker, Sr. is currently being planned.  In memory of Jack and his service to his country, the family has asked that memorials be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8517.  Online condolences may be left at carolinafuneral.com.  Carolina Funeral Service & Cremation Center-Charlotte is entrusted with the arrangements
