Peggy Jean Helms Russell, 94 of Charlotte, passed away on Thursday, February 22nd at Harris Hospice. Born in Charlotte on January 16, 1924, Peggy was the daughter of the late William and Beulah Pressley Helms. A lifelong area resident, Peggy served with the American Red Cross during World War II as a nurse's aide. She worked at the Hallmark Store 20 plus years at the former Eastland Mall. She was an active member of Memorial United Methodist Church since 1986,and the Livingston Sunday School Class. Mrs. Russell enjoyed gardening, animals and people. She loved to bake cakes and bread and share with family and friends.
Mrs. Russell was preceded in death by her twins Claud and Claudia and granddaughter Dawn.
She is survived by her husband Herbert D. Russell, sons Richard Helms and his wife Ann of Waxhaw, Phillip Helms and his wife Gloria of Hillsville, VA ; stepdaughters Denise Greenway of Charlotte and Teresia Frances of Monroe. Also surviving are her grandchildren Rick, Todd, Renee and James and 3 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 27th from 12-1 PM at Memorial United Methodist Church, 4012 Central Avenue, Charlotte. A service officiated by Rev. Peggy Bridgers will begin at 1 PM. Interment will take place at Sunset Memory Gardens, Lawyers Road.
