Robert Hess Obituary

Robert Hibbs Hess

Hess, Robert (Bob) Hibbs passed February 22, 2019 in Hospice Care at Novant Hospital in Matthews, NC of heart failure — probably a broken heart. He was 91.

Born and raised in Uniontown, PA, Robert received a BS from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania in 1950. He was also a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. He met the love of his life, Mickie Carbines who attended Beaver College (now Arcadia University) just north of Philadelphia. They married July 7, 1951.

Robert, Bob, Rah Rah, Bubba, Big Fish, or whatever else you called him, was a family man. As a father, grandfather, and great grandfather, his family was always his priority.  From coming to the rescue with a Wendy’s hamburger when grandkids forgot their lunch at school, to driving cross-country to ensure continued connections between aunts, uncles and cousins across the States, Bob always put his family first. As a dedicated son, he attended his father’s birthday party every summer at the Crawford Tea Room in Connellsville, PA. As a dedicated husband, he stayed by the side of his beautiful wife, Myrtle Anne (Mickie) Hess for 64 years — and loved her still the way he loved her when they first met. As a dedicated father, he raised four happy, successful, kind, and thoughtful children.

Bob was generous of heart, loved without boundaries, and always shared his warm smile with everyone who walked through the front door. He welcomed everyone in his home any day, any time, no questions asked, and generously cared for them with clean sheets, the makings of a deli sandwich, and a hot cup of coffee. His acceptance and love radiated throughout the kitchen, where he sat reading the newspaper, bright and early every morning. He was a much-loved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather and he was adored by his extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mickie Hess, parents, Dr. George H. Hess and Marguerite Hess, sister, Marguerite Morris (Garland) and granddaughter, Kristen Alice Masters. He is survived by his brother, Taylor Hess (Jane), 4 children: Jim (Gerri), Richard (Kathleen), Kathryn (Garry), and Peter; his grandchildren: Summer, Jimmy, Devyn and multiple great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a wide extended family.

A memorial service will be held at Sardis Presbyterian Church, 6100 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC 28270 on Saturday, March 16, 2019.  Visitation is at 1:30pm in the sanctuary with the service following at 2:00pm. Interment of Mickie and Bob’s ashes will be at a later time at Newell Presbyterian Church cemetery alongside of their granddaughter Kristen.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the KinderMourn Duck Race c/o team Kristen Masters at 1320 Harding Place, Charlotte, NC 28204. 704-376-2580.
