Arthur Paul Helwig entered eternal life on March 22nd, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Evelyn Helwig, and is survived by his wife, Gretchen, his two sons, Jeff Helwig (Kristin) and Wes Helwig, his two granddaughters, Olive and Jane Helwig, and his sisters, Katherine Helwig, Liz Nelson (Sam), and Mary Call (Bob), and many nieces and nephews.
Art was born in Dugway, UT and spent his early years in Baton Rouge, LA. He spent his teenage years in Richmond, VA, where he graduated from Douglas Freeman High School. He received both BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering, graduating from Virginia Tech in 1978 and Purdue University in 1980. After finishing school, he moved to the Phoenix, AZ area where he lived for 45 years, raising a beautiful family and building a fulfilling career in electrical engineering, starting at Motorola and finishing at General Dynamics.
Art was a sincere Christian and lived his life with purpose, humor and a deep love for his family. An electrical engineer for 36 years, his colleagues remember him as energetic, helpful, and meticulous. He also loved to throw himself into home projects. He was a skilled craftsman - there was never a problem he didn’t enjoy solving.
He loved the outdoors and was an avid fly-fisherman. He made his own fly rods, nets, and flies. He was also a beloved member of the Desert Fly Caster community and traveled all over the country with them to fish the best lakes and rivers.
He will be missed by his family and friends for his kind, earnest personality and his great sense of humor.
