August Hahn Obituary

Mr. August K. “Kurt” Hahn, a resident of the Carriage Club in Charlotte, N.C., died Tuesday May 23, at the age of 101.  He was born Oct. 2, 1916 in Detroit, MI, the son of Carl and Else (Hesselschwerdt) Hahn.
He spent the first several decades of his life in Detroit, graduating high school, before going to work at General Motors and then the Aluminum Company of America, where in 1936, he met Margaret Virginia Claspill.  They were married on New Year’s Eve of 1940.  She preceded him in death Jan. 20, 2014, at the age of 96.
The early years of their marriage were interrupted by WW II, when Mr. Hahn joined the U.S. Army. He initially served as an instructor in Field Artillery at Ft. Sill, OK.  Mr. Hahn was transferred to Ft. Ord, CA, then shipped overseas where he saw action in New Guinea and the Philippines.  The birth of his son, Kurt, in 1944, allowed him to return to the States, where he retired as a staff sergeant in 1945.
After the war, Mr. Hahn joined the Detroit division of Morse Chain Co. as a staff accountant while also attending night classes at Wayne State University.  Son Kurt was later followed by sisters Karen in 1947 and Marsha in 1956.
He was an accounting manager at Morse, which after it was acquired by Borg Warner, he transferred to their Ithaca, NY, division as assistant controller.   Spending the rest of his management career with Borg Warner, his job eventually took the family from upstate New York to Indiana, England, and finally back to Michigan. There he served as a regional controller in Troy, Michigan.
Upon retirement from Borg Warner, he and Virginia divided their time between Port Sanilac, MI, and Ocala, Fla.  They eventually moved to Charlotte, NC to be closer to their daughter and son-in-law.
Mr. Hahn was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, four brothers, and a sister.
He is survived by his son, Kurt, of Emmett, ID; daughter, Karen Hahn and son-in-law, John Staley, of Stratford, CT; daughter, Marsha Hahn and son-in-law, Paul Mecca of Cornelius, NC; in addition to four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and friend Thalia Mason.
