David Campagna Obituary

David Anthony Campagna, 79 of Charlotte, died Tuesday, March 10th in the care of Harris Hospice Unit. Dave was born in Lilly, Pennsylvania to Carlo and Mary Campagna. Both of his parents worked extremely hard to raise Dave and his 11 brothers and sisters.  His father immigrated from Italy and worked as a coal miner and owned numerous businesses around town to support his family.  His mother had her hands full raising a houseful of wonderful children and worked in those businesses as well.

Dave moved to Charlotte in 1961 and worked at NCNB where he met the love of his life, Joy. There we're married 54 years at the time of his death.  As one of 12 kids, it was easy to get lost in the crowd, so Dave wanted to make sure that his sons got all of his attention. All of it. And they are better men as a result. He was a computer programmer by trade, but his resume was much more expansive. He was a soccer coach, baseball coach, scout leader, PTA president, cheer grandpa, band grandpa, and number 1 fan to his kids and grandkids. He served his country in the Army National Guard and served his community through the Windsor Park Optimist club and Boy Scouts of America. He was a long time devoted member of Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church where he taught Sunday School for many years and helped with the weekly collection count. Dave also volunteered with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department in the Providence Division for over 10 years and the officers there considered him part of their family.

Everything that he did, all that he endured, he did for his family. Dave is survived by his wife Joy, his sons Jeff and Mike, their wives Jenni and Karen as well as his grandchildren Noah, Jordan, Emma  and Jackson, Also surviving are his sister Stella and brothers Len, Emil and Carl.

Dave was the recipient of a liver and kidney transplant, which extended his life by more than 18 years. He always encouraged people to consider being an organ donor. There is no easier way to make a huge impact in someone's life.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to LifeShare Carolinas or to St. Judes Children's Hospital in his name.

Memorial Mass will be held Friday, March 20th at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, 4207 Shamrock Dr. in Charlotte. Visitation will be held at 1pm and the Funeral Liturgy will begin at 2pm.
