David Foppiano Obituary

David Joseph Foppiano, Jr. entered eternal rest and everlasting life on 18 August 2019. He was born on 1 June 1928 to Lessie Cawthon Foppiano and David Joseph Foppiano of 85 N. Tucker in Midtown Memphis, TN.

A success at everything he did, David was one of the most likable and personable individuals one could ever know. He was an extraordinarily disciplined and regimented individual which allowed him to succeed far above even some of his own contemporaries, values he endeavored to always pass along to his children and grandchildren unselfishly. He entered the workforce a representative of Hollow Core Doors and went on to be the Local Sales Manager for Binswanger Glass Company of Memphis. Subsequently he became the Regional Sales Manager and, eventually, Vice President at which time he moved his family to Charlotte, where he ultimately retired. He gained the friendship, trust and respect of all who knew him and his gentle good humor and laughter will always be remembered. To his family while growing up he was affectionately known as “Brother,” to everyone else during his life, family and friends alike, he was “Dave.”

A devoted and caring father and husband, he attended Christian Brother High School and went on to become President of the class of 1956 at Christian Brothers College in Memphis. His lifelong faith as a Roman Catholic was practiced without fail and he was an avid financial supporter of the de LaSalle Brothers, the CBHS and CBC Alumni Association, of which he was a past president, and also of Boys Town. David was also a veteran of the US Army and, like all in the Foppiano family a lover of animals, especially dogs.

He had deeply instilled and honorable old-school values and principles which he carried through his entire life which he avidly strove to share and maintain, especially within his family. In recent years he became the intrepid and unceasing caregiver to his wife and he made certain that she never wanted for anything and was completely taken care of as together they progressed into their senior years. His children lovingly referred to him as “Daddy,” a title that could not be any more true or accurate as he genuinely was a Daddy - a carer, protector, defender, provider, affirmer, advisor, supporter and friend. Even as he aged and got more frail, his inimitable spirit and love of life, family and friends never wavered, and he simply would not allow anything to get him down or stand in his way. A trooper to the very end he was.

David was preceded in death by both of his parents and also by his two sisters, Helen Foppiano Sofge and Mary Jane Foppiano Long, a nephew, Mark Long and his grandson, Nicholas. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 59 years, Betty, the absolute love of his life and soulmate, of Charlotte, NC; a daughter, Cindy Foppiano Lee, two granddaughters, Alyssa Lee and Anna Lee, and a grandson, Daniel Lee, all of Charlotte; and a son, Scott Foppiano of Wadesboro, NC. He also leaves behind two nephews, Albert Sofge, Jr. of Washington DC, James Long of Cordova, TN and a niece, Jan Cain of Woodlands, Tx.
