Douglass Broughton Hill, born January 19th, 1950, in Kinston, NC, passed away on November
17th, 2024 in Charlotte. He was preceded in death by his parents, Whitford and Gladys Stroud
Hill, and sisters Marsha Reidhill and Sue Rogers. He is survived by his husband David
McElhannon, brother Roger and Ann Hill of Wilmington, sister Eleanor and Joe Goettee of Cary,
nephews, niece and grandnephews, many beloved Stroud and Hill cousins, and friends
throughout the country.
Doug's early life, growing up on a tobacco farm outside of Pink Hill, NC, was heavily influenced
by family, church and 4-H. In 1966 he was the state winner of the 4-H Home Grounds
Beautification Project. In 1968 he graduated from South Lenoir High School, a member of the
National Honor Society.
Doug earned a B.S. In Business Administration from UNC Chapel Hill in 1976 as well as an
MBA in Finance from the University of the District of Columbia in 1988. In his professional
career he was well-traveled, living in Raleigh, Kinston, NC, Washington DC, San Diego and
Sacramento, CA, and Charlotte. He worked in many finance roles including commercial loan
officer with the Small Business Administration, a real estate appraiser, a mortgage loan officer,
and a commercial loan officer with Wells Fargo Bank for twenty years.
Doug lived a fascinating life with adventures too numerous to fit into a few paragraphs, but two
of his noteworthy highlights include earning a 45 years sober pin from Alcoholics Anonymous,
and his participation with Team First Union in the 2000 Aids Ride 5. He rode a bicycle 335 miles
from Raleigh to Washington, DC, undertaking this grueling event just two days after being
released from the hospital after suffering from kidney stones. He raised $11,000 in donations
from all 50 states, D.C. and Puerto Rico, and was the only person in the history of the rides to
do so.
His ashes will be interred at Deep Run Free Will Baptist Church alongside his parents, sister
and other family members. His wish was to return to his roots in eastern NC and forever rest.
A private celebration of life will be held later.
