Elizabeth Rozzelle Womble, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, October 26, 2025. She was a golden 94 years young.
A native Charlottean, Elizabeth was born on June 22, 1931, in Presbyterian hospital to Marvin LeGrand and Rachel Summerrow Rozzelle. She enjoyed spending time with cousins at Mountain Island Lake, the Catawba River and working with her parents in their floral supply business. Many community events and gifts were embellished with the ribbons, silk flowers and floral accessories they purveyed.
Elizabeth inherited her mother's singing talent and enhanced her own by training and majoring in Voice at Mt. Vernon Junior College in Washington, D.C. She sang for the UFO, the US Navy Band and many other social and church functions, growing in her vocal interpretations, especially when singing hymns. Many a pew sitter quieted, listening to the soaring heart and soul in her voice.
As she married, had daughters and divorced, she furthered her collegiate path with a degree in Education at UNCC, focusing on Early Childhood Development; and having lived through the rationing of World War II and the Great Depression, Elizabeth became a staunch proponent of recycling and creatively reusing everything from discarded plastic containers, her endless supply of ribbons, to tablespoons of leftovers from which came many "magical stews" that delighted her grandchildren. Making a wonderful opportunity from a little of this and that was another of her special gifts.
"Liz" as she was known, had a way of opening her home and making people feel a part of family from Girl Scouts to young people meeting for food and fellowship. She was always ready to receive visitors, chatting easily with everyone. Her old school landline phone had a cord that could wrap around the circumference of her house, her children noticing the grooves that were worn into the floors by her many conversations and prayers.
She rarely ever slowed down, preferring to chat up the neighborhood where she lived and worked for 41 years and was known as "the grandma", watching generations of families move in, grow up, get married and have their own children. Flowers were always a part of that neighborhood life too - working in the Floral department at Harris Teeter with holiday arrangements, prom corsages, wedding blooms and the occasional "doghouse" or date bouquets, all the while dispensing cheerful balloons and watering wisdom for those flowers in need.
Downsizing found Liz another adventure in the gift of a new neighborhood. Her life at 90 included making new friends, walking greenway trails, going to exercise class weekly, fellowshipping and faithfully praying for the USA and world at large, and blessing everyone she met. Her greatest joy was seeing her grandchildren grow up, get married, and finally give her the first great grandchild.
Elizabeth's heart and lungs kept up with her very busy life until they didn't. She peacefully passed on to her heavenly home in her sleep on October 26th. The family wishes to thank Seniors Helping Seniors for their lovely helpers, First Light Home Care for their impeccable home caregiving service, and VIA Palliative and Hospice Care for their superior support team. We are very grateful for their assistance during this time.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her granddaughter Chaya Grace Dennis. She is survived by her daughters and their family - Elizabeth W. Dennis (Mark H. Dennis), Ariana E. Dennis, Matthew C. Dennis and Jonathan I. Dennis (Sidney F. Dennis); and Cathey W. Glenn (Jeff S. Glenn), Hannah C. Glenn (Matthew Wagner), and CPT. Cameron S. Glenn (Christen L. Glenn).
A memorial gathering and service will be held on Sunday, November 16th at 3:00 PM at Resurrection Church, 2940 Commonwealth Avenue, Charlotte, North Carolina 28205.
