Harold Eugene Smyre (1930-2024)
After a full life Harold Eugene Smyre, 94, of Charlotte, NC died on September 7th, 2024.
Harold was born in Hickory, NC on 02-Sep 1930 to Ralph Eugene Smyre and the former Gertrude Davidson. Harold attended Hickory High School in Hickory, NC and graduated with honors from the North Carolina State University School of Design in Raleigh, NC with a degree in architecture.
Harold was an avid world traveler and art collector, specializing in Mid-Century Modern furniture and North Carolina pottery. He enjoyed playing the piano, often playing at the Shepherd’s Center in Charlotte, NC. Harold was active in Senior Scholars and was a supporter of the Mint Museum and Queen’s University.
Harold designed the house in which his mother lived in Hickory. The house was featured in several articles on Mid-Century Modern design in North Carolina.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Eugene and Gertrude Smyre of Hickory, NC, by his brother Robert Lee Smyre of Hickory, NC, and by his nephew, William Ralph Smyre of Charlotte, NC. Harold never married and is survived by his nephew, Robert Andrew Smyre of Charlotte, NC and his niece, Jacqueline Anne Wesley of Colorado.
