Howard Dean Sherrill, 98, passed away in the evening of Saturday, June 17th, 2023 as a result of complications from a fall.  

Dean was born in Catawba County, NC on February 17th, 1925 to the late Howard Austin Sherrill and Jessie Howard Sherrill. He grew up in Rockingham NC where he graduated from Rockingham County High School. Dean began his 42- year career as an engineer with Seaboard Coastline Railroad (now CSX).

In 1949, Dean married Dot Evans and they raised their four children, Marsha, Butch, Robert and Susan in Charlotte, NC. Dean and Dot were active members of St. Johns United Methodist Church for many years, before joining Memorial United Methodist Church. They created many lasting and cherished friendships at both places of worship.

Dean loved the outdoors. He enjoyed going fishing with his railroad buddies, hunting, gardening and taking care of his yard. His yard was always admired by his neighbors in the Oakhurst area. Dean also enjoyed watching and cheering for the Atlanta Braves. He also enjoyed people, and his sweet and caring spirit made him dearly loved and cherished by many.

Dean was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Evans Sherrill, his parents Howard and Jessie, his older sister Margaret, and his younger brother Glenn. He leaves behind his four children: Marsha Shinn (Tom), Howard ‘Butch’ (Marian); Robert, and  Susan Vernon (Donnie); seven grandchildren Tommy, Jennifer, Adrienne, Patrick, Meredith, Justin and Jeremy; nine great-grandchildren; and his cherished companion Louise Renfrow.

A Celebration of Life is being planned for a later date.
