Joan Ellen Stooksbury Brown Obituary

Joan Ellen Stooksbury Brown, age 69, of Oak Ridge, TN passed away on February 10, 2023. She is preceded in death by her 18-month-old son Jason, stepson Randy Brown, and parents Juanita & W. Carlock Stooksbury.

Joan was a graduate of Norris High School Norris, TN class of 1971. She obtained her RN from Fort Sanders Presbyterian Hospital, School of Nursing - Class of 1974 and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the College of Saint Francis - Class of 1993. Joan touched many lives in her 25+ years of nursing at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. 

Joan was a great lover of the outdoors. As a child her favorite sport was climbing trees. If her family couldn’t find her, they knew to go look in the trees. Although she gave up tree climbing, her childhood love of fishing continued into adulthood. She & her husband, Geron, enjoyed many hours on the water fishing together. Her other hobbies included knitting, cross-stitch, & soap making. She had a great passion for reading and was an avid napper. Joan was a great companion to have on any road trip. She made sure there was a basket full of road trip snacks. She was never in charge of driving or navigation. Joan could guide you to the wrong State. Her family & friends have many treasured memories of travels with Joan wherever they may have ended up. 

Joan was a natural born nurse. She was always there for any family medical emergency or illness. You knew that you could call Joan at any time. She was ready to provide any care you needed during a sickness or injury. She knew exactly what was needed, told you what to do, & you had best do what she said. 

Joan knew her grandchildren were the best in the world, and no one could convince her otherwise. She found great joy in singing to them “not quite on key” and playing games when they were young. As her grandchildren grew older, she loved experiencing all the new interests or hobbies they took part in. Joan was very proud of their many accomplishments. 

Joan is survived by her devoted husband Dr. Geron Brown; daughter Amy Bright Talley & husband Adam, & their children Evan, Eva, & Weston; Stepdaughter Christy Brown Morris & daughter Wren, Stepson Geron Brown III & children Francis (deceased), Samuel, & Nathaniel Magone, & Dianne & Jonathan Brown; Sisters Beverly S. Leitner & husband Roger, Lisa S. Tavangaran & husband Mansour. Also survived by her loving cousin Barbara Young & many adoring nieces & nephews. 

Saturday, February 18th from 12:00 - 4:00, a Celebration of Life will be held at Calhoun’s in Oak Ridge, TN.
