Obituary
John Richard Johns shed his mortal coil and entered eternity on August 14, 2023, as a result of cancer.
Mr. Johns was born January 5, 1939, to the late Forrest Bailey Johns and Jennie Bingham Johns. He graduated from West Mecklenburg High School in 1957, and attended NC State (where he pledged Theta Chi Fraternity), Appalachian State University, Illinois State University and received his Masters in Accounting Science from the University of Illinois.
He served in the US Army Ordnance Corps as a guided missile repairman and military police security guard.
His career spanned electronic technician for General Electric and Caterpillar Tractor to Assistant to the Director of Financial Affairs for the University of Illinois to Certified Public Accountant with Deloitte Touche and finally Treasurer and Controller for First Federal Savings and Loan of Charlotte.
Mr. Johns was a boy scout as a youth and enjoyed working as an adult scouting volunteer in Mecklenburg County for 16 years, serving as Tuscarora District Chairman for 5 years. His special interests included gardening, water gardening, astronomy, and computers.
He is survived by the love of his life, Karen Gammon Johns, and his son John and sisters, Betty Black and Shirley Brown.
