Leonard R. Mathieu Sr., age 81 of York, SC, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2020, following a short battle with cancer. Leonard was born in Columbia, Connecticut in 1938 to Carl R. Mathieu and Louise (Strickland) Mathieu.
Leonard graduated Windham High School, in Willimantic Connecticut. He went on to join the U. S. Army where he was honorably discharged after 3 years of Active Duty and 3 years Reserve. Leonard worked in maintenance most of his life but also enjoyed building and woodworking as work and as hobby.
Leonard married the love of his life, Evelyn (O'Connell) Mathieu on August 9, 1958. Together they raised 6 wonderful children in Woodstock, Connecticut. In 2007 they retired and moved to South Carolina.
Some of the many hobbies that Leonard enjoyed were being an amateur Ham Radio operator and member of the Skywarn program, he was also a licensed E.M.T. and, for a time, belonged to the Bungay Fire Brigade, in Woostock Valley Connecticut. He also enjoyed following NASCAR and local stock car racing. He also enjoyed watching Football and Golf.
Mr. Mathieu is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn. Also their children: Leonard R. Mathieu Jr., Donald G. Mathieu, Kathleen A. Courcy (Stephen), David R. Mathieu (Angela Wall), Ronald L. Mathieu (Laura), and Son-in-Law Brian M. Warren (Ida) along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Leonard is also survived by his brother Gerald D. Ball (Elizabeth) and sisters Denise S. Smith and Lori Mathieu (Peter Chubka).
Leonard is predeceased by his parents, daughter Darlene May (Mathieu) Warren, granddaughter, Jennifer Sue Crouch, great grandson Tyler David Warren, as well as his brother Arther Mathieu (Maryjane) and his sister Lynn Marie Sobotta-Flanigan (Terry).
There will be a small and private ceremony at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, South Carolina. The family has decided that with the current Pandemic, to hold a Celebration of Life at a later date, which has yet to be determined.
