Mayree Kay Miller Obituary

Mayree Kay Ledford Miller
February 24, 1929 ~ September 4, 2021
Mayree Kay of Charlotte, fondly known as Kay Kay, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2021. Born in Harrisburg, PA., Kay Kay was the daughter of the late Harris Addison Ledford and Freda Widder Ledford. She was very proud that her mother was a Pennsylvania Impressionist and art teacher, and her uncle David Vernon Widder, was a Harvard math professor, author, and concert pianist. She was an exceptional painter but often laughed at her lack of math skills.

At an early age she studied piano, ballet and painting. Mayree Kay graduated from Queens College with a major in secondary school art education. She taught at Central High School and continued her education at Richmond Professional Institute, becoming a Registered Occupational Therapist.

She married John Joseph Miller, a Davidson College graduate and a USAF Sabre jet pilot. After their Air Force service, they returned to North Carolina so her husband could continue his family's business. Mrs. Miller became an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church where she taught Sunday school and was a lay reader. She helped design the columbarium at the church

Kay Kay enjoyed membership in the Green Thumb Gardners and Antique Study Groups. She was an avid hiker and wildflower lover with her cherished I'm A Lert Group. She taught children and adult art lessons for many years. She also tutored students at Eastover Elementary School for 10 years well into her 80s.

After moving back to Charlotte to help with her grandchildren, Mrs. Miller became a member of Christ Episcopal Church where she joined the Altar and St. Fiacre Guilds.
Surviving family members include her three children Gwynn Miller Sheffield (husband Thomas Crane Sheffield), Joseph Mark Miller, Catharine Miller Pappas (husband John Stephen Pappas) as well as her 7 grandchildren.

Services will be private. Memorials may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, Christ Episcopal Church, or Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region. Online condolences may be addressed to carolinafuneral.com,
