Melva Shumaker Obituary

Melva Payne Shumaker, 96 of Lake Wylie, SC., formerly of Bluefield, WV, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2020. In Lake Wyle, SC. Born on May 20th 1923 in Hinton, WV, Melva was the daughter of the late Henry H. and Elsie (LaPrade) Payne. She was raised in Bluefield, WV, where she also attended school. After graduation, Melva married her high school sweetheart, Jack A. Shumaker, Sr. of Bluefield, WV.

Melva and Jack settled in Bluefield where they raised three children on Clovis Street: Son Jack, Jr an daughters Barbara and Martha. Melva worked as an Office Manager for the St. Lukes Medical group, where she retired. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bluefield where she sang in the choir. Melva enjoyed playing golf, the piano and among her favorites were Bingo and Card games. After retirement, Melva and Jack traveled between their homes in Estero, FL. and Bluefield before finally settling in Sun City, SC in 2009. After Jack’s death Melva moved to Lake Wylie, SC where she spent the rest of her days.

Melva was preceded by her husband Jack Shumaker, Sr., son Jack, Jr, her brother Warren Payne, sister Lois (Payne) Lambert, and great-granddaughter Lindsay Marie Ward. Left to cherish her memories are daughters Barbara Shumaker Vlijmincx of York, SC. and Martha Shumaker Tillery of Apex, NC.; brother Harold Payne of Oregon, daughter in law Phyllis Shumaker of Fort Mill, SC.; grandchildren Lisa Murphey Ward of Kingsland, GA., Brian Shumaker (Gina) of Indian Trail, NC., Jennifer Shumaker (Eddie) and Jennifer Hrischenko (George) all of Charlotte, NC and Ben Thomas of Raleigh, NC. Also surviving are her 9 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.

The family sends special thanks to Agape Hospice and Lake Wylie Assisted Living for their love and care.

Melva’s ashes will be interred with her husband Jack’s in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton, WV at a later date. A service to celebrate the life of Melva is currently being planned.
