Richard Ferguson Obituary

Richard Louis Ferguson was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be remembered for his big heart and hilarious sense of humor.

Born January 28, 1944 in San Francisco, CA to Harry and Marilynn Ferguson. They moved to Milaca, Minnesota shortly after where he became “big brother” to 3 brothers and a sister.   

Richard chose to pursue a medical career, Graduating from University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.   It was during that time that he met the love of his life, best friend and wife, Sylvia Ruesink, who he married in 1965.  After he graduated, they moved to South Dakota and set up a private practice in 1968. Later, he joined the US Army where he served 21yrs.  Together Richard and Sylvia took great joy in being parents to their son Roger and daughter Johanna and Papa and Habeesh to their two grandchildren, Austin and Alayna.

Richard was an advocate for the mentally disabled, in which his son had suffered from many of its aliments, and never gave up hope of providing the upmost care for him.

He will also be remembered for his love of singing.  Much his time in the military and in retirement he enjoyed sharing his beautiful bass voice in chorale choirs, traveling all over the world studying under amazing vocalists.     

Survived by his wife of 55yrs, Sylvia; his daughter, Johanna; Grandson Austin; Granddaughter Alayna;

Brothers; Ron, his wife Franky; Robert, his wife Janet; Randy, his wife Audrey and Sister; Robin, her husband Bill.

He is proceeded in death by his parents, Harry and Marilynn Ferguson and his beloved son, Rodger.

Lieutenant Colonel Richard Louis Ferguson (Ret), will be honored with full military honors.  Friends are invited to celebrate his life on Sept 11, 2021 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m., with reception immediately following.
