Sheryl Ann Young Smith

June 25, 1964 – August 18, 2021

Sheryl (Sherri) Young Smith of Denver, NC entered her heavenly home on August 18, 2021 after a courageous battle with brain cancer.  Sherri was born in Charlotte, NC to M.C. Young, Jr. and Sara Zedaker Barber.  She was the baby of the family to her siblings Cindy Shields and Mac Young, III.  Nicknamed Bunny Rabbit by her father, she was a caring and loving daughter, sister and mother to her two children whom she adored.  Tyler and Neely (named after Sherri’s grandmother) were the loves of her life and were with her every step of the way as she battled glioblastoma for over a year. 

Sherri was a graduate of East Mecklenburg High School and CPCC School of Nursing.  She worked as a nurse at Novant Presbyterian Main for 30 years.  She loved caring for others and working along side the hardest working, most caring nurses and friends.

Sherri loved the beach her entire life.  She spent many good times at Myrtle Beach and later loved the beaches of Destin, Florida.  Some of her happiest memories happened around the sun and surf. She loved spending time with her family and friends at the beach where she was truly in her happy place.

Sherri is survived by her children Tyler Smith and girlfriend Kaylyn Tolley, Neely Riley (Raymond), her mother Sara Z. Barber, sister Cindy Shields (Glenn), brother Mac Young III (Cindy), sister–in-law Staci Smith Broadhurst (Jamie) and  her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father M.C. Young Jr.

Sherri was a member of Derita Presbyterian Church in Charlotte.

A special thanks to the Nurses of 3A Novant Presbyterian Main, friends and family and Huntersville Novant Hospice as they supported Sherri with love, cards, calls, food, flowers and transportation during her illness.

Arrangements are in the care of Carolina Funeral and Cremation Services.

A service to celebrate Sherri’s life will be held at Derita Presbyterian Church, 2230 W. Sugar Creek Road on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at 11:30 a.m.
