Stanley F. Michalski, Jr.

8/15/1934-12/28/2025

Distinguished Educator • Beloved Conductor • Mentor • Husband • Father • PopPop

Dr. Stanley F. Michalski, Jr., a profoundly influential figure in music education whose career as a conductor, educator, performer, clinician, and adjudicator spanned more than six decades, passed away peacefully.  His loss is mourned by family, friends, students, colleagues, and countless musicians whose lives he shaped through his passion for music and his generous spirit.

Stanley F. Michalski, Jr. was born in 1934 in Nanticoke, PA to Lottie (Waiter) and Stanley Michalski, Sr. He has one surviving brother, John (Delphine) Michalski.  He was predeceased by his two sisters, Francis (Suozzi) and Geraldine (Danish).  He spent his childhood immersed in music, playing the organ at Church, the accordion on the radio, and at countless weddings, parties and gatherings with his father, brother and uncles.

Born with a gift for music and a heart for teaching, Stan’s life was defined by the joy he found in sharing his craft with others. While earning his B.S., Master of Education, and Doctor of Education degrees from Pennsylvania State University, “Doc” built a remarkable 31 year career as a Distinguished Professor of Music and Conductor of Bands at Clarion University of Pennsylvania that included mentoring and teaching music educators.   He found great fulfillment in the many students he guided who went on to teach, conduct, and lead at the elementary, middle, high school, and collegiate levels. His greatest pride was his Marching and Symphonic Bands, from which he carried many cherished stories and memories.  He was the founder and conductor of the Clarion University Band Clinic.  The Council of Trustees at Clarion University, in March of 1995, approved a resolution naming the music rehearsal room in the Marwick-Boyd Fines Arts Building the Stanley F. Michalski Jr. Rehearsal Room.  He always kept Clarion University and his many students close to his heart.  “Carry on for Clarion!”

Clarion was a special place for Stan and his wife Joan.  They had many friends and colleagues.  He was president of the Clarion Area School Board for three terms and was President of the Board of Directors for the Clarion Hospital.  He was active in many community organizations and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. In his spare time he loved playing golf at Pinecrest Country Club.

Upon his first retirement from Clarion University, he and his wife, Joan moved to Charlotte, North Carolina to be near family, warm weather and year round golf.  Stan embraced a second chapter of service as Coordinator of Instrumental Music for the Mecklenburg Area Catholic Schools (MACS), where he built a thriving music program from the ground up. With vision and dedication, he transformed a modest initiative into a vibrant cultural force, touching thousands of students and nurturing their confidence, discipline, and love for music. Included in the program were 6 elementary schools, 2 middle schools and 2 high schools. He truly enjoyed visiting each school and the MACS office and getting to know the many students, faculty, office staff!  Stan’s warmth, generosity, and gentle humor enriched every room he entered. When he retired there were over 400 students participating in the MACS Band program.  Many of these students went on to become music educators and leaders in their vocations.  He found great fulfillment in watching students grow from the elementary level (where he many times accompanied them on the piano during concerts) to participating with the Charlotte Catholic High School band in Ireland.   All four of his grandchildren were, at some point, part of the MACS Band program. This legacy is reflected in the thriving programs he helped establish and the many educators and performers who attribute their beginnings to his guidance.  Upon his second retirement, the band room at the MACS Fine Arts Center was named in his honor and an endowment was established in his name.   In addition to his work for the Mecklenburg Area Catholic Schools, Dr. Michalski was an Emeritus Conductor of the Winthrop University Carolina Wind Orchestra. Post retirement, he continued to pass on his love for music as a volunteer piano player at Novant Matthews Hospital each Monday afternoon.

Stan’s professional achievements were numerous and distinguished.  In 1973, Dr. Michalski was elected into the membership of the prestigious American Bandmasters Association, the professional association of master conductors and musicians.  Membership is considered the highest honor achievable by American bandsmen, it recognizes outstanding achievement in the field of concert band. In March, 1997, he was elected President of the American Bandmasters Association - a post once held by the legendary band composer and conductor, John Philip Sousa.  In the same year, he served as President of the Eastern Division of the College Band Directors National Association.  Dr. Michalski has served as tuba soloist, clinician-adjudicator, and guest conductor in forty-three States, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Japan, Brazil, Korea and Europe.  He served as conductor of the International Youth and Music Festival in Vienna for six years.  His conducting assignments have included concerts throughout Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Holland, England and France.  His trips to Ireland  (many times accompanied by family members) to judge St. Patrick’s Day parades in Dublin, Limerick and Galway were an annual highlight and he made his final trip there March, 2025. He has also served as guest conductor with the U.S. Air Force Band, the U.S. Marine Band, the U.S. Army Band (Pershing’s Own), the Armed Forces Bicentennial Band, the U. S. Navy Band and the U.S. Army Field Band.

He was not only a remarkable musician, avid golfer and educator but a beloved family man as can be witnessed by anyone who knew Stan. He loved his family fiercely. He was preceded by his wife of 66 years, Joan (Wachowski).  He took profound joy in his family, Stan III (his son) and his wife Janice, Lisa (his daughter) and her husband Jim and especially his grandchildren - Carson (Pete), Stanley “Luke” IV,, MaryGrace and Meggie (Turner) -  who knew him as “PopPop,” (as did many of their friends!) a source of laughter, encouragement, and unforgettable stories. He and Joan have 4 great grand children - Piper, Hudson, Colton Stanley and Walker. He was a member of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church.

Stan’s legacy lives on in every note played, every student inspired, and every life he touched through decades of devotion to music, community and his family.

A private family prayer service will be held. To honor Stan’s lifelong commitment to music education, an endowment for students in the band program at Mecklenburg Area Catholic Schools has been established upon his retirement.  .https://charlottediocese.org/giving/dr-stanley-michalski-jr-endowment-fund/
