William “Bill” Vernon Barnes, 72, of Mooresville, passed away January 10, 2020. Born July 14,1948 in Pinellas Park, FL and lived in Charlotte through childhood. He was the son of William Vernon and DeVeux “Dee” (Knight) Barnes. He was the husband of Joanne (Reynolds) Barnes. After graduating from the University of South Carolina, Bill served 2 tours of duty in the Vietnam War as an Airborne Ranger. He pursued a career in law enforcement after the war and was a police officer in Lancaster and Columbia SC as well as a police detective in Broward County Florida. He enjoyed rock climbing, being outdoors and had quite a green thumb working with his bonsai plants. His knack with technology led him to teach computer science at Catawba Valley Community College. Bill loved riding his Harley and traveled with his wife to many bike rallies. He is survived by his wife Joanne Barnes; children Sandi (Dave), Jamey (Valerie), Joe (E’Schell); grandchildren Noelle (Paul), Riley, Nathan, Phoenix and Hunter; great grandchildren Leif and Parker.
