Welcome to the memorial page for

Matthew Stewart Hollowell

June 2, 1970 ~ January 25, 2016 (age 45) 45 Years Old

Matthew Stewart Hollowell, 45, passed away unexpectedly at home on Monday, January 25, 2016.  A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 30th at 11:00 am at Christ Episcopal Church, 1412 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC, with the Reverend Nicholson B. White officiating.  A private interment will be held at a later date.

Matt graduated from Charlotte Latin School and later Hampden-Sydney College, where he majored in political science.  A talented musician, Matt made legions of friends through the live music scene, able to step in to play any instrument or fill any needed role. He freely shared his time, equipment, and expertise with many arts and music causes.

The call of the outdoors brought Matt to camping in the mountains, hiking area trails, and the regular gathering of musicians and friends at the Campfire Jam in the SC low country.  With keen intellect, quick wit, and deep compassion for those needing a helping hand, Matt leaves a host of family and friends to mourn his sudden loss.  He gave rest and shelter to those who were down on their luck, in crisis, or had lost their way.  Seeking neither recognition, nor riches, nor credit, Matt unquestionably left the world better than he found it.

With his raucous laugh, infectious humor, and kind soul, it could be said of Matt that beautiful art comes from coloring outside the lines.  The course Matt charted was uniquely his, and his warm heart touched so many lives as a result.

Matt is survived by his loving wife Elizabeth Bain Hollowell; parents, Dottie Chambers (Jim) and Tom Hollowell (Lyttleton); brothers, Andrew Hollowell, Patrick Hollowell, and Nick Hollowell; step-sisters Mary Lunsford (Bill) and Elizabeth Shah-Khan (Murtuza); and a multitude of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.  All think of him as the coolest guy ever.
