I met Matt on the phone for the first time in late summer 2015. He had applied to perform during the Charlotte Blues Society solo/duo competition that was held in October. The winner would be representing CBS this week in Memphis.
He called himself 'Mudflap', and his tongue in cheek conversation was delightful.
When he came to perform, he did a really cool retrospective of the blues. It was unlike any other. Having read things friends have said, it seemed to be typical. He definitely colored outside of the box, which I really admired and appreciated. He did not win the competition...he won admiration from so many who saw him and "got it".

Thank you for the moments my mind and ears captured that Sunday afternoon Matt. You were a gift. God Bless you and your family.

So sorry to hear about Matt passing on. What an awesome guy he was, he loved music, loved life, loved everyone he met, but most of all, you knew how much he loved Beth! I have great memories of him that will last forever, and if there is one thing I know from the times I got to spend with Matt, he wouldn't won't anyone to be sad, he would want the music to play on, and he wouldn't say goodbye, but until we see each other again. Thoughts and prayers for Beth, and Matt's family, Beth if you need anything please let me know, I Love you!

Dang...I just can't believe Matt Hollowell is gone. I didn't know Matt well; he was in my circle of musical friends. I believe the man could play any instrument put in front of him. Myself an observer, I'd see Matt stand by quietly observing, then he'd give a goofy face or say something that made everybody laugh. And his laugh...the kind that came from the core and was real. Such a nice guy. Great hugs. I didn't know him well, but i will miss him just the same.
