Virginia M. “Bucky” McMullen
Virginia Medaris “Bucky” McMullen, 91, of Charlotte, NC received her promotion to glory May 23 at Sharon Towers. She was the daughter of the late Frank M. Medaris and Margaret B. Medaris of Kentucky.
Bucky attended Centre College and graduated with a degree in biology. While in college, she met the love of her life, Robert J. “Bob” McMullen, Jr. (now deceased). They were married May 21, 1948. Bob served as a pastor and she lovingly supported his ministry in churches in West Virginia, Virginia, Georgia and North Carolina.
Bucky is survived by three children; Peggy Packard (John) of Broadway, VA, Robert J. “Mac” McMullen, III of Charlotte, NC and Stuart McMullen (Che’) of Long Beach, CA as well as three granddaughters, two step granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two older brothers, Frank and Kenneth Medaris.
Bucky was a homemaker and did a lot of volunteer work. She and Bob raised a disabled son and she spent many hours working with and advocating for him. She volunteered with the Association for Retarded Citizens and won “volunteer of the year award” one year. She could often be found at Special Olympics events.
Bucky loved sports, especially professional football and baseball. She was a diehard Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta Braves fan. She was also an excellent cook, especially of desserts. Bucky enjoyed people and had a great sense of humor. Some of the phrases various family members have used to describe her include the following: always upbeat, seeing the bright side of an issue, an easy smile and frequent laugh, selfless, a sense of strength and determination and an inspiration.
A celebration of life service will be held Sunday, May 29 at Carmel Presbyterian Church at 2:30 with the Rev. Jim Szeyller. The family will greet friends in the Fellowship Hall afterwards.
Gifts in Bucky’s memory may be made to Sharon Towers Residents’ Assistance Fund 5100 Sharon Road Charlotte, NC 28210 or to Hospice and Palliative Care-Charlotte Region 1420 East Seventh St. Charlotte, NC 28204.
